Dar Williams - Terrarium
Every Saturday we protest things out on the campus greenÂ
And we came from far to find this place where hearts and minds are freeÂ
And we walk together on the grass in peaceful anarchyÂ
Where the things we've amassed are undeniably surpassedÂ
By the value of our goals and how high we can reachÂ
So when no one can pass Professor Leon Siegel's classÂ
It's okay because we still absorb the great things he can teachÂ
We send our greetings from the terrariumÂ
That earthy college paradise where kids can work and playÂ
But you know that when we leave from this terrariumÂ
We're told that we are going to save the world somedayÂ
It's another world we live in 'midst the placid greeneryÂ
We can talk about disaster and admire the sceneryÂ
When we cannot find an answer to our Nicaraguan warÂ
We can order out for pizza and deliver it some moreÂ
But while nothing much gets done and what we do just looks like funÂ
You must remember what we do is more important than it soundsÂ
For when a case is well done in Constitution 101Â
We know that bigger trials are possible to win on bigger groundsÂ
We extend our greetings from the terrariumÂ
That earthy college paradise where kids can work and playÂ
But you know that when we leave from this terrariumÂ
We're told that we are going to save the world somedayÂ
There's a fear that you will sell your dreams for stock and cut your hairÂ
As you throw your graduation cap up in the real world airÂ
Then you see a man in uniform approaching your best friendÂ
As he shakes the woman's hand he says "We need a few good men"Â
And it really breaks your heart to know she majored in Greek artÂ
And now your pacifistic friend asks for his card just like a queenÂ
Yeah, but then you'll watch her smile and start to shred that little card apartÂ
And the small white pieces flutter down like doves upon the greenÂ
We still get greetings from the terrariumÂ
That earthy college paradise that we all loved and ranÂ
And you know that now that we're gone from the terrariumÂ
We may not save the world but we know that we'll do the best we can
